I got back $40 with Price Protection..Ka-Ching

If you’re a frequent lover of my blog, you’ll know I’m a fan of Credit Cards. I love them, I use them, I am SMART with them. Paying cash is a rare thing in my world. Why? Well, it isn’t because I don’t have the money. It’s because when I make purchases with my credit card I earn FREE STUFF for it.

What kind of stuff? Well, to be totally honest, MONEY!!!

This year, I purchased a gift for one of the kids using my Discover Card. The balance was paid using PayPal cash earned with my fabulous online point earning skills. Just for using my credit card, instead of paying cash, I got back $40 with Price Protection. Discover Card has price protection. It’s a really cool benefit, and I love taking full advantage of it! Basically, when I used my card to make the purchase at our local store, I was able to contact Discover after I found the SAME item for $40 less at a competing store just about a week after I made my purchase.

I didn’t have to go to the original store, drag the kids with me, which would have been hard since it was a gift for one of them. I didn’t have to bring the Target book with me to Toys R Us, to show them the difference in price. I didn’t have to stand on line at customer service, deal with a manager, have the item returned, and re-purchased, and all that jazz.

Instead of the hassle, I picked up the phone, called Discover Card, and they sent me a form to fill out. Super simple, sent it back, and look at that…….$40 put back on my Discover Card. SWEET.

My love of credit cards started when I learned I could earn cash back when I made purchases. I never understood why people paid with cash (until I met people who used credit cards the totally wrong way, and just abused them) when they could use a credit card, earn cash back, and make out on the deal! And now, credit cards offer even more, like my beloved Price Protection. However, that’s not all there is to this love affair. Let me tell you why it makes my heart sing when I use my Discover Card…..

  1. Purchase Protection – I’ve got two kids, ages 6 and 4. It is inevitable that one of them will damage SOMETHING. If they do it within 90 days of me buying it, Discover will cover the expense up to $500. Even if it is stolen, they cover it up to $500. I find that really cool.
  2. Extended Product Warranty – If you purchase something with a warranty, it can be the manufacturer who offers the warranty, or if it is a purchase warranty, Discover will be happy to extend the warranty up to a year. There are some rules on this, but honestly, how cool is that? Especially in a world where all we seem to buy is electronics these days…….it looks like a Best Buy moved into our house after some of these holidays end!
  3. Return Guarantee – One of my absolute favorites. If you want to return something within 90 days of buying it, and the store has a policy of no returns, or a policy of 30, 60 days to return….doesn’t matter. If you used Discover, you can return it up to 90 days. Retailer’s policy doesn’t matter. Just make sure you do it within 90 days of your purchase date, and you’re home free!

I’m always going to choose to pay with a credit card over cash. It’s just a good idea for me, and my ability to think of credit cards as cash. If I don’t have the cash to back up the purchase at the time of the purchase, then the transaction doesn’t happen. If you can think like that, Credit Cards can give you so much more than if you just pay for things with cash. My favorite part is earning cash back every time I use the card, my second is the price protection benefit. However, there are so many other free benefits, as well as some benefits that you can take advantage of while traveling.

Credit Card user and proud of it!
